Supporting an alumni association to engage alumni, establish new chapters, and increase participation involves a combination of strategic planning, targeted communication, and community-building initiatives. Here are some ways to achieve those goals:
Create a Clear Alumni Engagement Strategy
- Understand Alumni Needs: Conduct surveys or focus groups to understand what alumni value and want from their association (networking, career services, events, social connections, etc.).
- Define Clear Objectives: Establish measurable goals such as increasing event participation, launching new chapters, or enhancing alumni communication channels.
- Segment Alumni: Group alumni by location, graduation year, career field, and other relevant criteria. This can help tailor engagement efforts and initiatives to specific alumni groups.
- Leverage Alumni Volunteers: Identify alumni willing to lead and organize activities in different regions. These volunteers can drive local engagement, build relationships, and foster a sense of ownership within the community.

Alumni engagement should not just be event-based—it should be continuous. Encouraging ongoing communication through newsletters, social media, webinars, and local meetups will help create a stronger sense of community and keep alumni actively engaged, even when they aren’t attending major events. By fostering a sense of shared ownership and community, the alumni association can become a hub of activity and support for both alumni and the institution as a whole. Engaging alumni is about offering meaningful ways for them to stay connected, contribute, and be proud of their alumni status. I am here to do just that.
